A native of Thunder Bay, ON DENISE SMITH (BFA, Lakehead University, 2010, MFA, University of Regina) received Ontario Art Council funding for her first solo exhibition, The Beasts of Intentions, at Definitely Superior Art Gallery, Thunder Bay in 2011.
In 2012 she was selected to participate in an artist residency at The Gimhae Clayarch CeramicsnMuseum in Gimhae South Korea, where she created a body of work and participated in thenmuseum’s A.I.R. Group Exhibition.
Denise was chosen in 2013 as one of six emerging ceramic artists to represent the province ofnOntario in HOT MUD: A National Survey of Contemporary Canadian Emerging Ceramists at thenArt Gallery of Burlington. She was subsequently invited to attend the Medalta International ArtistResidency program in Medicine Hat, AB.
Denise is the recipient of several academic awards at the University of Regina, a TeachingnAssistantship as well as a University Teaching Fellowship. Her work examines the relationshipnbetween humans and animals in western culture.
Denise currently resides in Mississauga and shares a studio in Toronto while working at theMississauga Living Arts Centre.
